Historical Note

Malcolm Carr Collier directed the Anthropology Curriculum Study Project from approximately 1963 to 1970. An anthropologist and author, Malcolm Collier, was married to Donald Collier, another prominent anthropologist and professor at the University of Chicago (1950-1970) and a curator at the Field Museum of Natural History (1941-1976). Throughout its existence, the ACSP produced the Origins of Humanness Patterns in Human History publication, a one-semester secondary course available to educators through the Macmillan Company. The project was sponsored by the American Anthropological Association and the National Science Foundation, and it included research regarding multiple archaeological excavations. Geographical areas with material included in this collection are Choukoutien (China), Tabun (Israel), Sterkfontein (South Africa), and Swartkrans (South Africa).

Scope Note

The materials are kept in a single series and are organized by the project’s personal numbering system. Each document also has a page number associated with it. The last folder contains materials without an ACSP number; these materials have been ordered by their associated page number. The collection includes sketches, diagrams, photographs, maps, charts, and photocopies. The materials are dated circa 1970s, as the Origins of Humanness book was published in 1971. Some of the materials are titled and are recorded in the inventory section of this guide.
