Formal planning for the seventy-fifth anniversary began in 1963 with the appointment of fifteen faculty members to the Committee on the Seventy-fifth Anniversary of the University. The Committee organized a series of commemorative events that extended from January, 1966 to June, 1967 and included lectures and conferences, the publication of books, the mounting of special exhibits, and the groundbreaking or dedication of several major University buildings. The year of festivities culminated in the Seventy-fifth Anniversary Convocation held on May 5, 1967, at which twenty-six honorary degrees were awarded.
The records of the University's celebration of its seventy-fifth anniversary comprise two groups of material: one series of administrative records and two series of records from the Committee on the Seventy-fifth Anniversary.
Series I indicates the degree of involvement by the President's Office in planning the celebration. Series II and III, containing the records of the Committee on the Seventy-fifth Anniversary itself, demonstrate the wide range of ideas generated by the Committee and the extent of participation by various members of the University community. In all series, original folder headings established by the President's Office or Committee have been retained.
